White House Defends World Cup Entry Bans, Citing Security Concerns
Andrew Giuliani, executive director of the White House Task Force on the FIFA World Cup, said the decision to block Somali referee Omar Abdulkadir Artan “was for very good reason,” though he did not provide further details.
His comments come amid broader political tension surrounding US visa decisions linked to the tournament. President Donald Trump has recently used unusually strong language toward Somalia, including remarks made during a Cabinet meeting in which he said, “They’re all crooks.”
Giuliani also addressed visa issues involving members of the Iranian delegation, stating that while 31 players and key coaching staff were approved, several other officials were denied entry. He suggested that some applicants may have misrepresented their roles.
“As you can imagine, there are some people that claim that they are coaches that may not be coaches,” he said.
He further emphasized that the administration is focused on preventing individuals allegedly linked to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) from entering the United States, arguing this is part of ensuring a secure environment for the tournament.
