Fifteen Al-Shabaab Militants Killed in Somalia
The Somali army's Danab special forces carried out a night operation on Saturday in Jilib district, southern region of Middle Juba, targeting the al-Qaeda-linked al-Shabaab terrorist group, the ministry said in a statement.
The operation showcased advancing military proficiency within Somalia's armed forces, particularly aerial mobility tactics enabling extended strike range against extremist targets throughout the region, according to ministry officials.
Al-Shabaab has waged a protracted insurgency spanning over 16 years against Somali government authority, systematically launching assaults on security personnel, government representatives, and civilian populations.
Military pressure on militant organizations has intensified since late 2024, with the Somali National Army and Puntland's semi-autonomous security apparatus escalating aerial bombardments against al-Shabaab positions across southern and central provinces, while simultaneously targeting ISIS (Daesh) strongholds in the northeastern Bari region. These expanded operations have received backing from international security allies.
The Jilib district operation represents the latest in a sustained campaign to degrade al-Shabaab's operational capabilities in Middle Juba, a region the terrorist organization has used as a strategic base for launching attacks across Somalia.
Defense analysts note the increased use of air mobility and coordinated special forces raids signals a tactical evolution in Somalia's counterterrorism approach, moving beyond static defensive postures toward proactive offensive operations designed to disrupt militant networks before they can execute attacks.
